Just how bored are they?

Apparently, my kids were very bored yesterday.

"How bored were they?" you ask.

Two words................ Snail races.

The cute little voice you hear in the video belongs to Max.

On a related note, does anyone know of a good way to get rid of snails?

That is just nasty. No advice on getting rid of snails, alas.

And of course, Max's voice is too cute.

I have never seen snails THAT BIG!
I had no idea we carried them in that size in our state.

Eww!

Max's voice about killed me. He is soooo cute! I love the one snail piggy backing on the other. I see that the snails are trying to teach your children patience, maybe you could point out to them that watching the snail race is a lot like when you ask them to clean their rooms, or get ready for church or school.
I understand beer is good, put it in a pie tin and they will come drown themselves. Although I don't know how you explain buying beer to your bishop, your kids, and the neighbors.

The beer in the pie tin does work - we did it in our garden growing up all the time. Of course, my dad tried to give them the cheap stuff, but those snails only went for Budweiser.

Snail races - very exciting! There was even a pile up - just like NASCAR!

It made me smile and say ewwww all at the same time. My parents encourage their grandkids to throw them on the ground and step on them. Which makes me want to throw up. But hey maybe the winner of the race could be spared?

Our old neighbours had a great technique for getting rid of snails - they would throw them over the fence into out garden (yes I saw it happen more than once).

Once when I was visiting an old friend whom I met at UNI (she has no children) my two eldestest, who were only 4 and 5 at the time, got bored and asked if they could play in her backyard. When the visit was finished we walked out to call them and found they were happily keeping themselves occupied by racing snails ..... right up her lovely, spotless french windows!

Brings back great memories of squashing snails with my grandma in the garden.

Love the blog!

I liked your opening "Just how bored are they"" I take an interest in boredom. See my blog ThePowerOfBoredom.com where I talk about the Elements of Interest. The Elements are highly individual. Speed is sometimes one of them. Not for your kids! I'm trying to figure out what about the snail race is so engaging to the children, how to name it? Any ideas?

Hahahaha! You can also sprinkle some of a can of beer around and then bury it up to the neck in the ground. The snails will crawl into it and drown.

That is a lot of snails! Sorry no help on getting rid of them :) Now I can hear Max's vice whenever you tell us something he said.

As several have suggested, beer works or buy a good snail bait product at your local nursery. I had to use both in my garden to rid of those little beasts. After two seasons of diligent snail baiting, I got rid of them.

That is stinkin' cute!

As for getting rid of them..I don't know any great remedies. But I've heard that getting rid of the shells you see laying around will help.

The 3 S's of Getting rid of Snails:

1) Salt
2) Snail Bait
3) Shoes?

I'd make a French joke but then I'd have to go through another one of those sensitivity trainings.
