Tonight, Brielle was helping Max read some words. When they came to the word "what" Max insisted on pronouncing the "H" sound.
Brielle said "Max, when you see a "w" and "h" together, the "h" is silent. It doesn't say anything"
and Max replied,
"WELL THEN WHY DID THEY EVEN PUT IT IN THERE?!?!?!"

EXACTLY, Max!! While I'm teaching my kids to read English (Polish is all completely phonetic and easy to read) I always answer these types of questions with, "Because English is stupid." (Not that I don't absolutely love English, but it's possible to be lovable and stupid at the same time, as everyone knows.)
A-freaking-men! And while we're at it let's get rid of the letter C which serves no purpose that isn't taken care of by some other letter!
Not stupid, just charmingly quirky...
Hahahahaha!! Max is THE BOMB!!
I KNOW!!! You really begin to realize how stupid the english languuage is when you help a child learn to read.
The kid is right.
Put him in charge!
Just wait until he gets to ph
Poor Max. Just beginning to recongnize the nonsensical in the world. Hang in there, kid!
Hahaha. I totally agree with Max. But my favorite part about this post is that you have a label that says, "my kid is a control freak." HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Excellent question, Max! I feel that way about a lot of things. Like peanut butter without chocolate.
i vote max for president!
Yeah Max, Show him the word Shreveport and how its pronounced than try and convince him that the world is logical!
Ah, but the language makes perfect sense if you remember how many different languages have contributed to it. I start with Latin and greek roots in third grade and never have a tough time with those "ph" words...they are all Greek! Every modern and many ancient languages have added words or spellings to modern English...I think it's fun...kind of like a detective show!
Gotta go teach some phonics!
Pax, all!
I definitely have wondered the same thing many, many times. Genius! Can he pull some strings to get the H taken out?
Stupid English.
What will poor Max do when he comes across knee and psychologist?
Good point Max. Good point.
Have you seen the "Family Guy" clip about whipped cream? They discuss this exact problem
I think that non native english speakers would completely agree with Max. And the world would be a simpler place with Max in charge of the alphabet!
Good point, Max! I LOVE the name Brielle! Can you help me convince my husband to name our next daughter that? Thanks. K bye. :)
