Time for a change

Max will start preschool at the end of August.

He needs to be potty trained before he can go to preschool.

We have been working on the potty training thing for a few weeks now.

Last week, I showed Max the box of diapers, I said "Look at how many diapers we have left."

Max looks.

I continue, "Max, this is the last box of diapers. When these are gone, there won't be any more, the diapers will be ALL GONE. After that, you will need to wear underwear and go potty all the time, and keep your pants dry. Doesn't that sound fun?"

Max nods in agreement.

"OK Max," I say "So tell me, what are we going to do after all of these diapers are gone?"

Max says "Buy some more!"

That's pretty much the attitude we've been dealing with for the last while. We talk and talk and talk to Max about how he needs to wear underwear, because the teachers at school will not change diapers.

However, today, we had a breakthrough :0)
Max did something on his own (related to potty stuff) that he had never done before!

Are you curious? Do you want to know what he did?

Before I tell you, here is a question, and I would like you to give me your opinion.

Our preschool requires that the kids be potty trained before they can attend classes. If you have a kid who can change his own diaper, does that count as being potty trained?

Yes, he really did it. He changed his own diaper.

Oh my...I can totally relate! What a little "bum"!!!

not sure what to suggest...we wnet bare bummed for a few days and that seemed to work.

Have you bought him new clothes for school? We went shopping for big boy underwear and clothes for school...that also got them thinking of what would be expected.

There was a little girl in our school that was not trained and the staff would not change her, they would call mom to do it. So mom took 2 days off work and they would come in ans watch the kids play and interact, but she told daughter that to go inside, she needed to only use the potty and no diapers....a bit extreme but it took only 2 days.

GOOD LUCK! Best advise is to not get stressed - they sense that and then keep fighting the change!

Oh heavens. "buy some more." This is how little boy brains work. Then they grow up to be men and can't figure out how to load the dishwasher. *sigh* Good luck!

I bribed mine with hot wheels. Found some cheap package of 10. He got to pick one out if he stayed dry all day and night. Worked for us.

What an intriguing question! If the potty-trained requirement is based on the teachers' unwillingness to change the kids, then yes, it would count. If it's based on an unwillingness to risk smell, leaks, a blizzard of those tiny gel balls should it get wet, then no, it wouldn't count.

But if he changes it himself, and does it promptly when needed, and discreetly disposes of the old one, would the teachers even know he wasn't potty trained?

Oooh, yeah, mine have done that, too. And I always think, "Hmmm, what's wrong with this picture?"

LOL!!!
That is too funny. I think it should count...it's just like changing a pull-up & aren't they "close" to undies?
You are so funny...he'll get there.
I'm so glad that my kids stay home...or is it just that I am lazy?
Pax.

I say that counts to me. My son's first experience with potty training was to swim in the toilet. He is now going into 2nd grade and we get it most of the time. He doesn't care that he is sitting in it so I say embrace him changing himself and tell the teacher not to watch if it bothers her. It is one less thing on your plate to deal with. Maybe he can be in charge of younger siblings, cousins, etc... Just hire him out.=)

BTW, I love the name "Max." It's my grandfather's name, and I've always loved it, but Adam hates it. I'm going to work on him for our hypothetical child someday.

And your son is obviously a genius.

That totally counts!

My younger son got to be so old that he would beg his sisters to change his diaper and call them 'Mama' just to avoid me and my "You're a big boy...you're too freakin old to be crapping all over yourself..." tirades and meanness.

My girls asked me if him looking so pathetic and calling them mama made me feel bad. I smiled and said, "Nope."

Just ask the school about pull-ups. I mean for crying out loud, he can just take his own stash and everything. To kindergarten...no prob. On his first date? Oh, excuse me for a minute cute chick on my date, I'll just be a minute I gotta check and see what that smell is....

He'll do it, he'll surprise you!

Hey, that's pretty good! But how would he handle a really messy diaper? :)

We finally had to bite the bullet for the same reasons. It's catching on, although after that first week, I was ready to stick a fork in my eye.

That's awesome. Can he change other kids' diapers, too?

I clicked on your blog from the LDS women blogger site, enticed by your clever anti-whining blog title... a philosophy that I have tried to adopt as the mother of two boys.

I have thoroughly enjoyed your posts about parenting. My sons are a bit older now, but I was not too far removed from their terrible threes, as it sounds like you are experiencing with Max. (Yah. Mine were perfect little angels at two, but their heads started spinning around like the exorcist kid at age three. Go figure.)

And my oldest was just as wiley at the potty training thing. But I kept telling myself, "He won't be going on a mission sporting Huggies... He's not going to walk down the isle in a diaper... This too shall pass. It's just gotta!!!" And eventually it did. So good luck. Sounds like you've survived it before, but good luck, indeed.

Jill, I took your suggestion and emailed the ward conversation to Overheard in the Ward, and they posted it. Yay for inappropriate church conversations!

That is awesome! I think it totally counts! My little one can get his off, but it's the getting a new one on that has him stumped He's only almost 2, so I still have some time. Good luck with the potty training!

While I don't recall changing their own diaper as being part of the potty training readiness test, I am dang sure it should be added! Good luck!

I love it! And yes I think it counts.

HAHAHAHA! That's hilarious!

I am in the exact same situation with my Nathan. Preschool is about to start, but with all the chaos of our recent move, I'm not sure I can push the potty on him yet (though at least I've finally started trying). It's kinda scary!

My kid used to bring my a diaper, throw it at me and say: "I need to poop." She was Potty trained, just not poop trained. Ahh. Those were the days. NOT!
