Because it's "cool" to have frostbite (pun intended)

Why do teenagers think that they don't need to wear coats in the winter?

Please discuss.

You hit the nail on the head.....somehow that makes them "cool". My son wore long pants all summer one year because it wasn't "cool" to wear shorts. I thought it would have been cool...pun intended.

Our five-year-old grandson won't wear a jacket to school and wears shorts cuz he wants to be "the toughest kid on the playground." It's a mystery for sure what makes kids feel "cool." I never remember that particular trait with my daughter. But I'm sure it was something.

It is just SO inconvenient to have to go ALL the way to the CLOSET and get an EXTRA, HEAVY piece of clothing. It just cramps style, and goes against the teenage way.

I agree that it's a combination of rebellion and laziness. Mine are always losing their jackets or just plain don't bother to look for it.

We live in Texas so Summers are in the 100s. Many of my children wear jeans and hoodies all Summer. One of my kids says he wears black jeans all Summer because he doesn't like his legs (thinks they are too skinny).

Now that it's winter I'm seeing shorts and t-shirts. *sigh* I think it's a macho thing. He claims it's because he's from Nebraska and likes it cool (but he wears at least 3 layers all Summer).

Who knows?!

I think it's males in general. My husband doesn't either.

It's because their hearts are so large and so warm; extra layers, whose only purpose is to keep one warm, are just redundant.

I fought this for ONE year and then gave up. The natural consequence of not having a coat is that you are cold. If they can live with that consequence then it's no business of mine!

Coats are so overrated anyway : )

When you figure it out, let me know!

(For the record, I'm still horrible at wearing my coat. Mostly because I hate wearing one while I drive or when walking through a store. I tend to just keep one in the car..for emergencies)

I know we did the same. I don't remember if it was because we were in a hurry or always warm or perhaps we were trying to prove our strength, that we were impervious to the weather. Nah. Probably just trying to be cool.

When they lose a limb, they'll wear a jacket. I'm done arguing with them.

Who knows, my nephew ( who isn't from here) was told he might need to walk home form practice the other day, so did he grab a jacket. Nooooooo, he said he would wait until we got back in town so we could come get him. If It had been me on the phone, I would have told him to start walking.

My 5-year-old refuses to wear a jacket, so I make her carry it anyway! And then she whines in the car because she is cold, and wants me to turn the heat up, and her jacket is sitting right next to her! She also refuses to wear socks. That's going to be fun when it starts snowing!

Isaac says he hates having to carry his coat home when it's warmer in the afternoon. (But, I KNOW, it's ANNOYING.)

I went to the midnight showing of Eclipse. It was last November and and FA-REEZING. I was bundled in my biggest, nerdiest coat, gloves, hat, scarf, and I was still frozen. (Also stupid, but that's not the point.) I was behind a group of teenagers that just had lightweight hoodies on. One even talked about having a coat in the car but she didn't want to go get it.

My point is, I have NO IDEA why it's cool to be cold. Maybe to show how tough you are? It makes no sense.

My cousins son refused to wear a coat when he was younger because he wasn't cold. His school even sent mom and dad a nastygram telling them they needed to dress him appropriately for the weather. She sent back a note that said that he has a coat inside his backpack, but chooses not to wear it.
